Department of Civil Engineering (CE)
About Us
The CE Department of MIST, standing on the four pillars of morale: fundamentals, innovation, excellence and advancements, holds its glory of being the pioneer department of MIST. By creating a positive learning environment and sharing the most up-to-date technological knowledge and skills, the department of CE produces next-generation top-notch engineers and leaders for the nation. Since its commencement in 1999 with only 40 military students, this department has emerged to house and train 404 engineering students in undergraduate level at current time. It is the first ever department of MIST to receive the accreditation from the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) in 2008.
This department has again pioneered the Post Graduate program by introducing the MSc / M.Engg and PhD in 2012 and 2013 respectively. This department is enriched with highly experienced and disciplined teaching staffs having wide vision. At present, 33 faculties are serving in this department of whom 7 are PhD qualified from home and abroad. This department highly promotes interactive learning and collective class-environment which helps the students become more engrossed in employing themselves with the subject-matter and develop their depth of knowledge in engineering education. In addition, the programs emphasizing on engineering science and design, provides students with ample opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by solving real-world problems under the guidance of our readily approachable faculty members. This department also contributes in the country’s infrastructural development. Many important construction works, projects and professional vetting works in the field of structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering are carried out with the consultancy service of this department.
Preparation of Master plan and Eco- Park for Mirpur Cantonment, Jahazzar Char and Lebukhali land reclamation projects, vetting works of Radisson Blu Hotel-Cox’s Bazar, Arch RC Bridge on Wasa Khal at Goidetek-Adabor, Mirpur Cantonment Market, Garment buildings inspection, assessment of different military installation and other numerous civil Engineering tasks have already been carried out by the faculty members of this department. Various tests regarding material properties, construction quality controls etc. are also on-going in our laboratories under commercial testing services. All-in-all, within a very short span of time, the CE department of MIST has spread its outreach throughout the nation and is playing a vital role in building an ingenious society enriched with engineering transcendence and revolution.

To become a recognized leader in producing highly competent civil engineers by imparting quality education, promoting useful research and striving to induce social responsibilities, ethical values and leadership to enhance quality of life for people of the nation and the world.
Mission of the Department of Civil Engineering
- To provide a high quality learning environment for students in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels through a broad-based, rigorous curriculum, emphasizing theoretical and practical concepts to gain fundamental and specialized engineering knowledge, while they develop skills in critical thinking, communication, leadership and lifelong learning.
- To create opportunities for students and faculty to conduct basic and applied research that contributes to society by advancing sustainable engineering principles and practices.
- To provide civil engineering leadership and service to the nation, the profession and society at large with strong professional values, and disciplined work ethics.
Program Educational Objectives (PEO)
- Graduates of Civil Engineering will develop a sound background in fundamental science and engineering principles as applied to civil engineering for a successful professional career.

Programs Offered
Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Civil Engineering
The BSc program in the Department of Civil Engineering at MIST provides a strong foundation in the core areas of civil engineering through a balanced blend of theoretical instruction and practical application. The curriculum is structured to build essential analytical, design, and problem-solving skills while exposing students to modern engineering tools, laboratory work, and field practices.
The program currently has an enrollment of 404 students.
Master of Science / Master of Engineering (MSc/MEngg) in Civil Engineering
The MSc/MEngg programs offer advanced academic and professional opportunities in specialized areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, and water resources engineering. These programs are designed to enhance professional competence, foster innovative research, and equip graduates to address complex engineering challenges in academia, industry, and infrastructure development.
Current enrollment: 272 students.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering
The PhD program focuses on high-level research and scholarly contributions in civil engineering. It provides opportunities for original investigation in specialized fields, emphasizing innovation, critical thinking, and solutions to complex engineering challenges. The program prepares candidates for leadership roles in academia, industry, and research institutions.
Faculties
The Dept of CE draws its strength from the experienced pool of highly professional faculties. The dept is headed by the Head of the department and consists of 8 Professors, 7 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors and 17 Lecturers which translates to around 1:10 teacher to student ratio. The faculties are drawn in from diverse prior professional exposure (Military, Industry, and Academia), diverse educational qualification and background and thus provide large areas of expertise for students to benefit. Labs and Teaching Infrastructure
The dept of CE provides for a conducive learning environment for the students in the form of state of the art classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. While the classrooms provide an opportunity to learn the technical aspect of the subject, the laboratories provide an opportunity for the students to have a “hands-on" experience on technology and thus innovate. The air-conditioned classrooms with broadband wifi, projection system, document readers are an ideal place for collaborative learning. Currently, there are 8 different well-equipped laboratories for all disciplines of civil engineering. In the future, this lab will be expanded to incorporate more modern testing and research facilities.
Departmental Library
To augment the learning facilities in the Department, a department library has also been established. This library is in addition to the MIST Central library and holds over 600 books and close to 350 thesis of ex-students. The books in the library are procured based on the recommendations of the faculty members and students and are mainly available to assist the students in their research work. Also, there is printing facilities for students and faculties.
The library is well subscribed by the students and is a hub of research work and project activities undertaken by the department. It provides the students undertaking different courses an ideal platform to exchange ideas and collaborate.
CATS-MIST (CE)
CATS-MIST (CE) started its journey in the year of 2008 with a view to provide material testing and consultancy facilities. The associated laboratories are concrete laboratory, solid mechanics laboratory (SM Lab), geotechnical engineering laboratory, transportation & materials laboratory, environmental engineering laboratory and geographic information system laboratory. Under the direct involvement and supervision of highly qualified professionals, CATS-MIST (CE) has successfully conducted a huge number of consultancies works. This established a strong reputation and till today CATS-MIST (CE) is continuing the works with the best possible integrity and quality.
Projects
The Civil Engineering Department at MIST embraces a project-driven culture, engaging students and faculty in real‑world engineering challenges. Recent student theses examine advanced structural behaviours such as comparing the cyclic performance of bolted versus welded connections in fully encased composite columns, while hands‑on experiments explore the flexural and compressive behaviour of reinforced‑concrete beams and built‑up steel sections. Faculty‑led consultancy projects, often executed through CATS‑MIST, tackle national infrastructure needs; for example, a 2025 study developed a traffic management plan for the 2200‑acre Jolshiri Abashon smart‑city using field surveys and macrosimulation to forecast demand, and another evaluated road, flyover and bridge options to connect Mirpur 12 with the Uttara South Metro Station. Current research spans hydrodynamic and wave‑impact assessments for coastal roads, shear performance of concrete beams made from recycled aggregates and textile fibres, microplastic contamination in major rivers and land‑subsidence risks from groundwater extraction. These initiatives are supported by well‑equipped labs such as structural mechanics, concrete, transportation and geotechnical—which provide design, testing, traffic modelling and soil analysis services, ensuring that MIST’s CE community turns theory into solutions for national development.
Conferences and Seminars
To ensure a continuous and effective flow of knowledge, conferences and seminars serve as essential platforms for academic enrichment. The Department of Civil Engineering regularly organizes national and international conferences and seminars to support students in enhancing their professional and research skills. Through these events, faculty members and students remain closely connected with emerging research trends and contemporary advancements.
The department hosts programs addressing significant civil engineering challenges, featuring distinguished national and international experts as keynote speakers. Notably, the department had the privilege of organizing the 1st International Conference on “Advances in Civil Infrastructure & Construction Materials (CICM)” and the International Conference on Climate Change (ICCWS) in 2015. In recent years, the department has also arranged several important seminars, including the Seminar on “Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Concrete Bridges” (2025) and the Seminar on “Advancement in Sustainable Infrastructure” (2024). Over the years and continuing to the present, the MIST CE Department has remained proactive in organizing a series of noteworthy seminars and conferences that significantly contribute to academic excellence and professional development.

Publications play a vital role in showcasing the academic strength and innovative spirit of MIST. Faculty members, researchers, and students regularly publish their work in reputable national and international journals, conference proceedings, and thematic book chapters. MIST actively encourages scholarly writing by providing research grants, laboratory support, and collaboration opportunities with global institutions. The institute also publishes its own peer-reviewed journal, the MIST Journal of Science and Technology (MIJST), which serves as a platform for sharing high-quality research across engineering, science, and interdisciplinary fields. Through continuous publication efforts, MIST contributes valuable scientific knowledge, supports evidence-based development, and upholds its reputation as a leading center for research excellence in Bangladesh.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Department of Civil Engineering always inspires and supports for voluntary social philanthropic activities that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of university education. Diversity in clubs and extracurricular activities plays an important role in adolescent lives and futures. Our students promptly take part in cultural competitions, debate competitions, leadership development programs, etc and have certainly proved their capabilities in the above activities. CE dept was Champion in inter dept football competition in 2025. Our students have also proved themselves in the field of cultural competition as well. Our students also know how to have a little fun in spite of their academic involvement. They arrange CE fest yearly where different competitions like truss challenge, pervious concrete challenge, Cad contest, poster presentations, etc are organized successfully.
